Chess is not only a sport and an art but an intellectual game, closely bound up with cognitive ability.

Chess became a source of inspiration in art and literature as early as the Middle Ages, when the game spread through the Arab world and Europe. Chess is «a sport masquerading as an art». The world champion Emanuel Lasker held that «there is a magic in creative ability that great poets and philosophers possess, and creative chess players possess it in equal measure».
